This is a place about 30 minutes north of Nha Trang. As you can see, there are a number of small islands off the shore. My wife made her escape from Vietnam in the late 1970's by heading for one of these islands at night and then making her way onto a small fishing boat. The boat was intended for 2 or 3 fishermen but about 45 desperate people were on it.

I am told that the survival rate of people escaping by boat was around 10%. Most died at sea by storm or exposure, or at the hands of pirates who preyed on helpless victims in overcrowded boats
